What is the Clean Truck Check (HD I/M) and does it apply to me?
The Clean Truck Check is a mandatory California Air Resources Board (CARB) program to ensure heavy-duty vehicles meet emissions standards. It applies to nearly all diesel and alternative fuel vehicles with a GVWR over 14,000 lbs operating in California. This includes vehicles registered out-of-state, public vehicles, motorhomes (CA registered), and commercial fleets. If you drive on California public roads, you likely need to comply.
How often do I need to get an emissions test for my truck?
As of October 2024, most vehicles require testing twice per year. However, starting in October 2027, vehicles equipped with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) will transition to a quarterly (4 times per year) testing schedule. Agricultural vehicles and non-commercial motorhomes generally remain on an annual testing schedule. Always check your CTC-VIS account for your specific deadlines to avoid DMV registration holds.

How do I prove my compliance to the DMV or CARB?
Once we complete your test, the results are submitted to CARB via the CTC-VIS system. You must also ensure you have reported your vehicle in the system and paid your annual compliance fee. Once all requirements are met, you can download your Certificate of Compliance from your account. Note: It can take 1-3 business days for the system to update with the DMV, so don’t wait until the last minute!
